Kylie V - “Anomaly”

Vancouver, British Columbia-based singer-songwriter Kylie V has just released the heartrendingly folksy vibes of “Anomaly.”

Kylie wastes no time here, letting their vocal begin immediately, urgently sifting through the remnants of a lost love in order to reflect on the person they are today. Their voice is emotive and operatic as it glides above the stripped-back sounds of an acoustic guitar, effectively bringing the listener into the melancholic fold.

We’re not quite sure how they’ve done it, but the guitar tones are reminiscent of all our favorite songs by Novo Amor– the chords are thick and creamy, imbued with the fluid of authenticity. Subtle layers of vocals flood the production and, needless to say, we have found “Anomaly” firmly implanted within our indie folk niche.

Over the course of the song, additional elements reveal themselves at a steady pace. The warm, round notes of a bass emerge, followed by the glimpses of an electric guitar– all the while, a synth swells in the distance as the supporting vocals make their way into the foreground. Finally, the beat from the drum kit arrives, splendidly providing some forward momentum.

For those of us who have ever had our hearts removed at the hands of another, Kylie V’s “Anomaly” becomes an extension of our own, tortured emotions. But even if you’ve been lucky enough to avoid tragedy your entire life, you will still find the journey through Kylie’s storytelling quite cathartic and we imagine “Anomaly” will find its way into the playlists of many.
