Hailing from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Kelly McMichael has served up a masterpiece with the playful and artsy indie pop track, “You Got It Wrong.” The song explores the dissolution of a long-term relationship through catchy melodies and infectious grooves.

You Got It Wrong” is quite simply a vibe. Built upon a crisp staccato piano groove, the track has an irresistible sense of lively, driving rhythm. It feels as though the music is beckoning you to dance. Brief sections of ascending legato notes imbue a feeling of contrast, heightening the sense of tension and release.

Intricate layers of kitchen field recordings, handclaps, finger snaps, string noise, amongst a kaleidoscope of other layers, accentuate the rhythmic energy of the song. The quirkiness and creativity display the wonderful flair of Kelly McMichael as a composer. Whilst adding an upbeat feel that strikingly complements the piano, it also imbues a lush, informal, and relaxed vibe, which makes the music truly irresistible.

The playful vocals of Kelly McMichael infuse the song with a sweet, harmonious, and nostalgic vibe. The melodies flow smoothly and effortlessly. Layers dance and intertwine, creating a rich and tight sense of harmony. The call-and-response of “no one has ever got it this wrong before” really becomes one hell of an earworm by the second play– it is extremely catchy.

You Got It Wrong” is taken from the forthcoming new album, After The Sting of It, slated for release later this year via LHM Records. Connect with Kelly McMichael: Instagram | Facebook | Spotify | Bandcamp | YouTube
