Katherine Paterson - “Bloom”

Dallas, Texas-based singer-songwriter Katherine Paterson has just released Bloom, a three-song EP comprised of indie-folk goodness. The title track, “Bloom,” is the third and final single, and moves the listener “through loss, reconciliation, and release, celebrating where we are now even as a result of the grief we carry with us.”

Bloom” opens with the staccato plucks of a mandolin, which we do not hear nearly enough of these days, even though we cover a great deal of indie folk on the blog (folksters, take note). Paterson’s wonderful vocals shortly appear and carry the listener away on a gentle breeze– it is immediately clear that her voice was made for this genre. A minute in, we get a bit of bass and some percussion to add to the atmosphere, guiding us into the gradual crescendo of the song, with vocal harmonies tenderly placed into their perfect positions. A violin swells just before that staccato mandolin takes back the spotlight and suddenly the production lifts to a gentle roar as the instruments engulf every last drop of sonic space.

This is quite the folksy feat and we cannot wait to see what Paterson brings us in the future. But, for now, everyone should simply play “Bloom” on repeat.
