Justin Sconza - “Native Birds of Guam”

Chicago-based singer-songwriter Justin Sconza returns to the blog with the pop punk track “Native Birds of Guam.”

Native Birds of Guam” channels the spirit of the late-1970s New York music scene, when memorable tunes and sharp hooks rattled the charts. Shades of The Ramones and Blondie are clear in the toe tapping infectious energy of this banger.

From the first to last note, Justin Sconza keeps the momentum high, propelled by driving electric guitars with a gritty, downstroke rhythm reminiscent of Johnny Ramone. Nostalgic pads support giving an unmistakable Blondie touch whilst the odd lead guitar line weaves hints of Chrissie Hynde. It is familiar, unexpected, exhilarating, like being swept up into the neon lit streets on a Saturday night.

Justin Sconza cooly contrasts the music. He doesn’t approach the song with rasp or edge you might expect. His performance is controlled yet laid-back. Creating a sense of calm amidst the swirl of forceful guitars. Lyrically, the song mourns the extinction of birds creating powerful imagery that is both nostalgic and a stark reminder of what has been lost.

Infectious, rollicking and unrelenting, “Native Birds of Guam” is classic pop at its best. Connect with Justin Sconza: Spotify | SoundCloud | YouTube | Bandcamp | Instagram
