Julia K - “Lie”

We are big fans of the way artists find some sort of deliverance through their craft, so when we saw that Julia K’s pitch for her new track, “Lie,” contained the words “emotional catharsis,” we were all ears. As much as a lie can be the cancer of any relationship, including friends and family, Julia K uses it to describe the way “…someone asks you ”Are you ok?” and you say yes, but you’re really not...”

This track is categorized as indie rock, but it actually checks off some of our indie folk boxes, particularly in the sense that other, well known indie artists are often considered folk singers. “Lie” is reasonably bare in its production, especially at first, when it just a reverberated electric guitar that accompanies Julia K’s sweet and vulnerable vocal performance. And as we listen to her embark on her emotional purge, we can feel the track gradually growing into something much larger. About half way through, the bass comes in, thickening the sonic experience as the vocals gain volume, followed by some light percussion and synthy strings. The entire track is a giant crescendo that, in a way, builds in the same way that a lie will snowball its way through your life, ultimately becoming an avalanche if left unchecked, destroying everything in its path. This is one that you need to hear.

Julia K adds: “I’m a very private person… even with my family, and talking about my feelings is the worst. So of course, I’m writing about it in my music… There are a few things that go through my head every day that make me angry or sad, and I have to tell them to someone.”
