California-based Jordan Frye debuts on the blog with the polished, Laurel Canyon-esque track “feel free.”
“feel free” is an upbeat, positive and radio-friendly track that walks in the tradition of 1970s soft rock. It has that suave delivery you would expect from bands like the Eagles or Bread, which makes sense as Jordan Frye is a fellow Californian. It’s a song that isn't pretending to be anything other than a great song. Melodic, smooth, laid-back, and one you would stick on during the good times.
The one thing that impresses me about “feel free” is the incredibly tight arrangement of the instruments. We have the bouncing bass and the steady drums, but it’s the texture from the brittle acoustic guitar, the thoughtful bursts of almost John Squire-esque jangly electric guitar lines, and the subtle ear candy of harmonica and bright organ that keep peeking out from underneath the mix.
The vocal, in many ways, takes a back seat to the music. It’s a narrative-driven story that Jordan Frye delivers confidently. He’s comfortable in his own skin and incredibly warm. But again, the 1970s are never far away, with soaring harmonies that are reminiscent of the Eagles. They inject that classic disarming soft rock vibe which the world always needs more of.
Lyrically “feel free” is a coming-of-age portrait of a girl called Caroline leading a man beyond the life he has mapped out. Inspired by Jordan Frye’s partner, it celebrates taking chances and living in the moment.
