Jodie Nicholson x The Early Purple - “We Can Talk”
Darlington-based singer-songwriter Jodie Nicholson has just released the remarkably raw and intimate “We Can Talk,” featuring Matt Saxon, aka The Early Purple.
“We Can Talk” is the kind of song that will swallow you whole if you allow it. At first, the track is so sparsely populated that it seems as though Nicholson and Saxon have opened up a guitar case and offered us an impromptu private performance. From the gentle plucks of the acoustic guitar, to the whispery presence of Nicholson’s voice, every detail has been authentically captured, allowing the song to feel like a secret shared between artist and listener.
Across the refrain, a wondrous vocal harmony is layered into the arrangement from Saxon, providing a hefty sense of width to the sonic landscape, particularly in juxtaposition to the intimate plane on which “We Can Talk” exists. At this point, the track begins to gently crescendo, incorporating the soft keys of piano with an emergence that is so deliberately subdued that, at first, you may not notice that they’ve arrived.
The chords of the piano are eventually heavy enough to give the track a steady pulse and with some additional vocal textures, “We Can Talk” fills in the empty cracks of the entire universe.
About the track, Nicholson adds: “If you’ve ever felt lost, or misunderstood, this (to me) song is the moment you finally come home, to yourself or your person/people. It’s like coming home after a long day. I adore this tune so much. I hope it finds a warm home in people and it stays with them for a long time.”
