Jake Tavill – “Forgotten”
From Brooklyn, singer-songwriter Jake Tavill has shared “Forgotten,” the first single from the forthcoming LP Walk With Me.
“Forgotten” is an ’80s-tinged serving of soulful dream pop that reflects the fear of being emotionally erased after a relationship ends. It manages to span an entire love story, from the nerves of first meeting to the anxiety and fighting that eventually leads to the end. Lyrically, especially in the final repetition of “I won’t be forgotten,” the song reads like the mantra we’ve all repeated to ourselves, hoping any of it mattered.
All of this is delivered to the listener quite effectively, at first via a lo-fi rhythm atop some city street foley, before moving into reverberating, melancholic piano chords. It is here that Tavill’s magnificent vocal performance begins, primarily utilizing a retro soul falsetto that is equal parts Young the Giant and Beck. For atmosphere, heavenly layers of harmonies and subtle horn textures fall into place over the course of the track.
Overall, “Forgotten” feels as though it would be perfectly at home in the playlist you utilize to soundtrack your broken heart. Walk With Me is due out on November 13, but you can enjoy “Forgotten” now, wherever you get your music.
