Iona Luke - “Existential”

UK-based indie artist Iona Luke arrives with her latest single, “Existential,” a track that rests along the edges of doubt, insecurity, and the intensity of artistic expectations.

Existential” bears a great deal of commercial weight, and it appears as though it’s been polished to a professional sheen. From the lo-fi beat that ignites the track’s outset, to the raw, pulsating power chords from the acoustic guitar, the verses provide a chill, pop-rock vibe to support the Fiona Apple-ness of Iona Luke’s vocal performance.

But once she drops the hammer on her delivery, she appears to channel Florence Welch–  the power and vibrato will blow you away as this radio-ready tune shifts into overdrive on the ear-worm hook of the chorus. Complete with fuzzy guitars and a hard-hitting rhythm, listeners will have no choice but to sing along with this epic journey through self-discovery, overthinking, and introspection.

Iona Luke adds: “In a madly oversaturated music space, figuring out where you stand and what you have to say is scary stuff… When I had to decide whether I’d be ‘Iona’ or ‘Iona Luke,’ I repeated my name in my head too many times and had the mini existential collapse we all get when a word suddenly looks a bit funny.”

Existential” is an ambitious, captivating offering to the world of music, with aux vocals on the second verse that have sent us back to the play button more times than we care to admit. If you’ve never before heard the music of Iona Luke, you might want to do it now so you can tell your friends that you were a fan before she got famous– this jam is a freakin’ jaw-dropper.
