Mary Ruth - “I Want Too Much”

Nebraska-raised Mary Ruth has decided to share with us her latest release, “I Want Too Much,” a lovely indie folk song that captures the essence of her storytelling. In her submission, she described the song as simply: “travel, change your life, Bon Iver vibes.” With our interest piqued, we promptly pressed play.

Inspired by true events, “I Want Too Much” begins with an upbeat kick drum and acoustic guitar that, together, set the pace for the rest of the production. We do not have to wait long before Mary’s quietly confident vocals enter, informing us of a dream she may or may not have had on the train from Paris to Amsterdam. We do not have the lyrics in front of us, but the first line, “in my dreams I’m a warrior,” is echoed very well in her matter-of-fact tone.

We hear some melancholic phrases throughout the track, such as “he says don’t leave me like this… but I don’t need him to exist…” However, the rhythm builds with such a force that any vulnerability exuding from Mary’s voice is immediately counterbalanced with the conviction and determination of the instruments. This results in a marvelous tale of empowerment and if you do not find yourself stomping your foot to the beat of “I Want Too Much,” then it’s very likely that you never wanted enough in the first place.
