The song’s appealing honkytonk like piano melody starts the song and immediately draws the listener in. I really like how the ivories are being constantly tickled throughout the song as if Dr John had been called in to play.
“How You Told Me So” is incredibly stripped back, but the overall production is flawless, and each instrument is expertly combined to produce a rich and full sound. The bass gently pulses underneath and the drums set a nice groove. The electric guitar works really well with the piano, providing some really great licks. Later on, the addition of a trumpet perfectly adds to the great vibe occurring here. There is not only nostalgia in these tones, but also quite a bit of elegance.
The lyrics explore complicated emotions in a conversational style that seems approachable and intimate. Rice’s delivery of the song’s main theme—getting through skeptics and naysayers—is compelling and sincere. The vocals by Rice are the icing on an already outstanding track. With just the proper amount of grit to give it character and passion, his voice is friendly and welcoming. The track’s message of tenacity and success is wonderfully encapsulated by the bright and strutting New Orleans mood of the tune.
