hooper - “my favourite mug”
From a small island off of Canada’s west coast, hooper swoops in with “my favourite mug,” a remarkable, 1960s-flavored cup of indie that will win you over as soon as you press the play button.
Our preferences for indie rock are quite specific, as we have always been drawn to more of a raw, dark, and gritty production– as opposed to modern studio “magic.” That being said, we are very pleased to inform you that hooper has reached back to the sounds of yesteryear, wrapping “my favourite mug” in a fabric that is equal parts John Lennon, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, and your preferred ‘90s slacker rock.
From start to finish, hooper reveals a stacked arrangement, complete with vibey guitars and an anchored rhythm section– a perfect foundation for his vocal performance, which is familiar enough to win over most listeners, with subtle nods to Tom Petty, the aforementioned Lennon, and a host of other folky singer-songwriters that populated the airwaves during the early 1970s. In short, the influences are all over the spectrum.
“my favourite mug” is one of those rare compositions that sounds as though the entire band performed it in the studio and nailed it in one take. There are even moments of background foley to make this aspect mare believable, as though the song was designed to serve modern listeners with evidence that music used to be more about authenticity than autotune and digital manipulation.
hooper adds that the track is “an anthem for homebodies” and that it “distills that lifelong musical upbringing into something disarmingly simple: a love song to an inanimate object, and to the small, everyday rituals that offer comfort and steadiness through life’s shifts.”
It should also please you to learn that “my favourite mug” is just one of an album’s worth of songs, as it is our understanding that hooper is releasing the LP, Super Duper. Stay tuned for more on that, as we are sure to feature more if it, and connect with hooper here: Spotify | Instagram | Website
