High Libido - “Skyscraper”

Skyscraper,” the latest single by UK based High Libido, is full of slow swagger and emotional intensity.

Both the psychedelic and classic rock genres are drawn on for this composition. Acoustic guitar arpeggiates over a lo-fi drum rhythm, creating an original, captivating, and yet retro mood to the song. Synthesisers are added, which again gives the song a nice, 1970s retro feel. The foundation is established with a rich, warm, and gritty bass line, the first real hint that the song is going to take on a heavier tone. A clean drum sound is introduced, along with an explosion of guitar, giving the track a real sense of width and power. A nice texture is provided via the panning of tom tom fills.

The song, for me, really turns into a beast with repeating unpolished guitar riffs. They effectively drive home the hook and turn the song into a real earworm. The song continues to utilise different synth layers before the coda of guitar riffs bring the song to a satisfying conclusion. The vocals in “Skyscraper” are exquisite, giving the music a sense of passion and supported really well by the different vocal layers. They deliver the lyrics, which explore coping with loss as if they are being sung from the heart.

Skyscraper” demonstrates High Libido’s ability to produce well-executed, classic psychedelic rock songs. The guitar riffs are addictive and the vocals are like honey. This is definitely one to check out.
