Gooseberry – “D.B. Cooper”
Brooklyn trio Gooseberry return to the blog with the playful and muscular “D.B. Cooper.”
“D.B. Cooper” is an intricately crafted and ruthlessly efficient stoner alt-rock track that packs in as many rock ‘n’ roll thrills in as possible, and that is exactly what we love to hear at the blog! It scratches an itch you never knew you needed scratching, dripping with ease and confidence. It is upbeat, tongue-in-cheek and moody in all the best possible ways.
The song definitely has shades of The Black Keys and Queens of the Stone Age. It is built upon a sublime groove from the bass and drums, which you can only describe as heavenly. Firstly, that thick-ass bass meanders entertainingly and nimbly across the song, supported by the syncopated patter of the drums in the verses, which shifts up the gears in all the right places into a butt-shaking stomp. Supporting this groove are the tank-tread guitars that crank up the momentum just when you need them to.
As for the vocal, well, it’s just awesome. Conversational for the most part, it is also seductive, soulful, smouldering and soaring, like a desert fever dream. It’s a performance that lingers long after the song ends.
