Finlay Birch – “Inside Your Mind”

Ahead of his forthcoming LP, Scottish singer-songwriter Finlay Birch has just released “Inside Your Mind,” an expansive, atmospheric glimpse at emotional ambivalence within intimacy and understanding.

Birch initially emerged on the indie scene with a stack of lo-fi bedroom recordings, and we are pleased to say that hints of this DIY aesthetic are present in “Inside Your Mind.” The authentic nature of the recording provides ample evidence that it has been crafted by human hands, a quality that many modern releases simply lack.

Inside Your Mind” fades in with a swell of feedback before bursting to life with a moderately upbeat rhythm. Wide guitar chords and subtle piano surround the bass and drums, filling out the edges of the mix and carving a path for Birch’s vocal delivery right down the center. A harmonizing falsetto underscores his performance, creating a dreamy glow around the production—all without the aid of digital embellishment.

For its duration, “Inside Your Mind” occupies the type of sonic space that compels you to save it for long drives into the night, the kind where the only destination is deep introspection. Many of us live with the fear of drifting apart, and Birch’s lyrics offer an attempt to “Speed things up… So we don’t burn out.” Moving toward the end of the song, “Coz I feel I don’t know dear” acts as a mantra repeated in the hope that it might eventually reveal a deeper truth.

About the track, Birch explains: “I wanted this one to feel like it was constantly moving… It’s about wanting to get inside someone’s head and understand every part of them, but the music almost takes over and turns that feeling into something much bigger.”

Inside Your Mind” is the third single from the LP Weight Will Unwind, due out June 12, and if it is indicative of what the rest of the record has in store, we truly cannot wait to hear the rest of it. Connect with Finlay Birch here:Bandcamp | Instagram | TikTok | Spotify | Facebook
