Eva Cassel – “Good Enough”

Nashville, TN-based indie artist Eva Cassel debuts on the blog with “Good Enough,” a folky portrait of heartbreak and self-doubt.
We are no strangers to the vulnerability demonstrated through indie folk — in fact, we prefer it — so when we discovered “Good Enough” in our stack of submissions, we immediately decided to feature it here. Beginning with the remnants of a gritty voicemail, the track invites us into the debris of a failed relationship, the lingering emotional wreckage left behind, and the songwriting that emerges from it.
For a track about devastation, Cassel resists the temptation to leave everything raw and exposed. Instead, we are greeted with a surprisingly upbeat rhythm section supporting a catchy lead guitar melody that almost masks the song’s emotional core. In fact, it is only through the lyrical content that we are reminded where “Good Enough” was born. Cassel’s vocal performance is confident, coated in warm tube saturation, with little evidence that she “wrote this song in a fetal position on the couch at 1am.”
The star of this show arrives with the chorus, where a half-time beat allows Cassel’s stacked vocals to bloom into something genuinely cathartic. And, of course, it is difficult not to get pulled in by the hook: “What’s the difference between good and good enough.” If that line alone is not enough to reel you into Cassel’s world, the closing mantra certainly will be: “They say you know when you know, but I don’t…”
Created entirely in her home studio, “Good Enough” does much more than what it says on the label. Written in the aftermath of a breakup, Cassel has crafted an expansive, full-band production that enters the ears as though she trusts us enough to share her innermost thoughts and fears.
