Emma Geiger - “Invite You”

We have featured every tune that Emma Geiger has sent over to us, so upon the release of her new EP, Reverse Bloom, we felt compelled to ‘invite you’ to come and have a listen.

If you scroll through our archives, you will find the reviews for “All Your Words,” “Empty,” and the EP’s title track, “Reverse Bloom.” And we call them ‘reviews,’ even though when the music is this raw and authentic, our words write themselves; however, if you, indeed, seek the honest and intimate sounds of genuine folk music, press the play button on “Invite You.”

This track begins with the gentle, lo-fi strums of an acoustic guitar, ascending in a major-keyed chord progression, wonderfully setting an introspective vibe. Geiger’s vocal sweeps in like a soothing breeze, offering an otherwise contrasting, melancholic delivery over E major. And for the first bit of “Invite You,” it’s just the guitar, her voice, and the listener.

Patience shall reward you with a dreamy and elegant vocal harmony, followed by some deep, warm notes from a bass, providing width and depth, respectively. A gentle rhythm arrives with the ethereally-charged sounds of a slide guitar, adding a vintage-tinged flavor to an already stellar performance.

In a world that seems to have been overrun by autotune and midi, we cannot tell you how satisfying it is to catch an earful of Geiger’s raw and veracious craft. Each of her songs sound as though they have gone straight from the microphone to the listener, which, as far as we’re concerned, is the epitome of indie folk music. We are confident that once you’ve heard “Invite You,” you’ll spend the next twenty minutes exploring the rest of Reverse Bloom.
