Ellur - “Satellites”

To effectively send you off into the weekend, we would like to offer up the latest track from Ellur, entitled “Satellites.” We’ve been following her journey ever since she released “Now I’m Alone,” and it is always a thrill to see where her sound is taking her. From playing festivals to supporting Holly Humberstone at Leeds Academy, the sky is literally the limit for her artistry.

Satellites” brings with it some of the raw piano work that initially caught our ear when we first heard “Now I’m Alone,” even though the production here definitely permeates more of a commercially polished sound. For the first part of the tune, it’s just the piano and Ellur’s vocal, which completely wins us over with its breathy vibrato, plus the fact that it is reminiscent of some big names, such as Brandi Carlile and Joni Mitchell.

It isn’t long before a string quartet emerges, widening the sonic landscape and adding a great deal of depth to the overall arrangement. And while we would have been more than satiated with a solo performance– which is absolutely rare for us– we are completely thrilled to hear the cinematic result of the quartet as it glides ethereally above the soft piano notes.

To provide a bit of dynamic fluctuation, Ellur lets the power of her vocal performance bring “Satellites” to its crescendo, nailing a falsetto or two on the way back down. It is at this point that the quartet retreats, revealing a raw and intimate ending that mirrors the track’s origin. If you’re in the mood for some music that echos the “disintegrations of relationships,” then “Satellites” is just the song you’ve been looking for.
