Ea Othild - “You Love the Thrill”
From Oslo, Norway, singer-songwriter Ea Othilde has just released “You Love the Thrill,” the fourth single from her forthcoming album.
According to Ea Othilde’s Instagram, “You Love the Thrill” is her homage to Elliott Smith. And if she is trying to imply that this new cut is brimming with a spectacularly melancholic sense of raw and intimate emotion, then she is right on the money.
For the first half of the song, “You Love the Thrill” is sparely populated, relying quite heavily on the sounds of a waltzing acoustic guitar. It is not long before Ea Othilde begins her vocal delivery, which is so full of breathy, authentic vulnerability that we cannot help but to hang onto every syllable as though it is life support.
About one third through the track, the hypnotic rhythm of a drum pattern emerges, adding a decent serving of momentum to the back half, most assuredly keeping the listener engaged. This is also where some subtle auxiliary vocals bubble to the surface, as well as some gentle notes from a banjo.
Each time we’ve listened to the tune, we’ve managed to find something new to love about it– from the distant and ghostly notes of a slide guitar, to the exposed breakdown at the conclusion. Ea Othilde claims to have written “You Love the Thrill” “out of fear — fear of the power someone can have over someone you care about. The song is like a letter — sent without knowing if it will ever be read, or understood."
