DÜÜL SUNS – “Still I Do”

DÜÜL SUNS from Brooklyn, New York, return to the blog with the soulful and nostalgic classic rock song “Still I Do.”
“Still I Do” is a brilliant, absolutely effortless love ballad that succeeds marvellously. It would be hard not to draw comparisons to Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” here. There are similarities in the vulnerability, its sentimentality, and its contrast between tenderness and power. There are perhaps some similarities in the melody, but it is also a sound that is unmistakably from the 1970s and I could draw comparisons to Crabby Appleton, Splinter and Badfinger who were also knocking out these honest, romantic love songs in the same fashion during that era.
But DÜÜL SUNS wear those influences on their sleeve, and they wear them proudly. They also add something new to the equation in that no one else is really doing this anymore. No one else is really writing songs with the same directness, power and honesty. Something was in the water in the 1970s, and we need it back.
The music is pretty conventional in its arrangement… the glittering acoustic guitar, the warbling clav keys, the woolly bass and the loose but forceful drums. The music is alive, and it’s not polished to death. It feels analog. It feels warm. It feels beautiful. We’re also given a perfectly judged guitar solo that is designed to capture your heart. It’s just a good old-fashioned record that would not have felt out of place being released in 1971.
The vocal again knocks it out of the park. It’s slightly conversational, with a searching quality, but opens up dramatically over the chorus. Rising when the emotion needs to rise. It is supported by some sublime stacked harmonies that imbue the whole song with a spiritual, gospel-like quality.
“Still I Do” is a timeless and wholesome track designed to stir your soul and lift your spirit.
