DIMILA - “Hide And Seek”

A recurring motif in our more recent blog posts has been music that sounds freshly modern, but also warmly nostalgic. Moving forward with that same energy, meet DIMILA. This is the first time that we’re hearing from the Munich-based singer-songwriter, but her new single, “Hide And Seek,” is proof that it will not be the last.

From the very beginning, there is a bass synth that pulsates beneath “Hide And Seek,” commanding the music onward. The mood is faintly reminiscent of classic Annie Lennox, with all of the modern vitality of Florence + The Machine. Atop this pulse, there are confident chords from a piano and a steady kick/snare rhythm– when a song begins this stoutly out of the gate, we can only assume that it’s going to amaze us… And amaze us it does.

DIMILA’s voice is uniquely her own, but slightly similar to the magnificent stylings of Julia Jacklin and Tomberlin. She smoothly glides through the lyrics, exploring how “unresolved questions cloud the mind” and the way “one tends to hide not only from the truth, but also from oneself.” As we’ve said many times before, we prefer songs that promote introspection, and this song is precisely what we had in mind.

The harmonies on the hook are absolutely divine, and DIMILA carries them over into the second verse. Upon listening, you will notice that this song has all the potential to find its way onto international pop radio, which is where we expect to hear it in the coming months. “Hide And Seek” manages to blur the lines between indie pop, folk, and dream pop, giving it the ability to collect listeners from multiple genres, and that is exactly what a great song should do.
