Austin, Texas-based singer-songwriter Devon Grace has just released “Losing Game,” a track that explores love and reflection through dreamy, atmospheric textures and gorgeous vocals. This one is incredibly hard to pocket into a genre with threads of jazz, experimental, ambient, and folktronica making up the captivating musical tapestry of the track.

Losing Game” is built around dreamy, almost hypnotic, fingerpicked electric guitar that weaves clean reverberating tones. The gentle groove immediately creates a feeling of contemplation and reflection. At the halfway mark, the composition starts to transition into something more experimental. The weaving fingerpicking begins to warble under heavy tape effects, which feel reminiscent of “Chromakey Dreamcoat” by Boards of Canada.

Bell-like keys add ambience whilst orchestral elements infuse a subtle jazzy sophistication. The mellow clarinet layer is noteworthy with its refined sense of melancholy. A lo-fi drum groove is also introduced, providing a slick sense of momentum. The track though is full of surprises and just as we are settling into this new groove, the momentum slows and the pitch descends, adding a great experimental twist.

The vocals of Devon Grace are delivered with a sense of breathy intimacy. The soft tones effortlessly float over the composition whilst being supported by lush, harmonising backing layers. The vibes are truly dreamy. “Losing Game” is an exquisite experimental track that really highlights the musical talent of Devon Grace and it would make the perfect addition to all of your favorite playlists.
