Derde Verde - “After The Storm”

Los Angeles-based Derde Verde have just released their sophomore album, Tug Of War. From it, we’ve decided to take a closer look at the single, “After The Storm.”

If you are unfamiliar with the work of Derde Verde, prepare yourselves for a melodic soundscape of epic proportions. This trio have completely nailed the formula for writing songs that encompass some of the best dramatic and dynamic shifts we have ever featured on the blog.

After The Storm” begins with a quick drum fill before being joined by guitar and bass. Unlike our usual flavor of indie folk, there is no doubt that these guys are a rock band, perfectly capable of a more edgy performance, but the song is a perfect balance of all our favorite styles.

It is not too long before the vocals of lead singer Dylan McKenzie arrive, at first a bit reminiscent of The Flaming Lips or Grizzly Bear. Strewn across the top of his guitar work and a solid, rhythmic foundation from Jonathan Schwarz (bass) and Colin Woodford (drums), “After The Storm” is a strong performance, straight out of the gate, maintaining its confidence from start to finish.

Of course, when a song exceeds five minutes in length, it should contain twists and turns, rises and falls, and we are delighted to tell you that this is the case. Listening to “After The Storm,” you are bound to get the impression that these three guys from LA are operating as though they all feed off of the same, musical brain. Their timing is impeccable and the accents are full of purpose.
