dani mack - “Everybody’s Watching”

When last we heard from Baylee Barrett, aka dani mack, she was serving up the lo-fi pop of “Nothing Better,” but she’s back on the blog today with the indie rocking “Everybody’s Watching.”

No time is wasted here, and Barrett begins her moody vocal as soon as the track is underway. NPR has compared her music to that of Liz Phair and while we tend to agree, please let it be known that Barrett can certainly hold her own vocally. And while her voice is certainly a highlight within “Everybody’s Watching,” the rest of the arrangement should not be ignored.

The rhythm section here has all the vibe of having been recorded with analogue gear, which is one of our favorite aspects that sometimes finds its way into modern music. And though the music could have very well been composed using midi and a host of vintage-sounding plugins, it has every bit of that thick, creamy flavor we’ve come to know and love.

With “Everybody’s Watching,” you will find vocal harmonies and doubles in all of the right places, as well as lovely moments of dynamic shifts in the form of brief breakdowns that highlight the melodic bass notes. All of this combined makes for a fantastic summer anthem about “the pressures of youth, success, and living in the now amidst the constant chase for the elusive 'next best thing.’” We cannot wait to hear what dani mack send us next.
