Clyde the Band – “S.O.L”
Los Angeles-based indie rockers Clyde the Band debut on the blog with “S.O.L,” a song exploring the difficult truth that some relationships are only temporary.
For the first half of this tune, the adventures of fictional character Clyde unfold beneath a canopy of softly strummed acoustic guitar. In the distance, warm layers of auxiliary vocals unite with interstellar swells of ambience and, admittedly, we could listen to this section on a constant loop and never grow tired of it.
The story itself is delivered through a vulnerable, folk-leaning vocal performance, meticulously double-tracked for maximum listening pleasure. A subtle harmony layer and long, low cello tones emerge, lending the bare-bones arrangement a wonderful sense of ever-expanding atmosphere.
Slow-burning and effortlessly building toward its crescendo, S.O.L” reveals the first glimpses of percussion and lead guitar, alongside a gentle nod to Pink Floyd’s capacity for storytelling and their seemingly boundless sense of musicianship. However, to fully appreciate this, we suggest listening to each of Clyde the Band’s releases in order of appearance.
For further insight, founding member Sean Temple adds: “I wrote ‘S.O.L’ about longing for someone who doesn’t see you the same way… At the time of writing the song, I had just gone through a breakup and started developing feelings for someone who sadly didn’t feel the same way I did. I channeled all those feelings of hopeless insecurity into the lyrics of ‘S.O.L.’ The song is supposed to represent the realization that some things just aren’t meant to be.”
It was not long ago that we listened to music because it revealed a larger fictional history while simultaneously showing us who we were. Clyde the Band’s “S.O.L” is a gentle return to that craft, and we are completely here for it. Connect with the band: Instagram | Spotify | TikTok
