Christina Cavazos - “Can’t Get Worse”

Austin-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Christina Cavazos has just released “Can’t Get Worse,” a rich and folksy journey through the trenches of heartbreak.

Acoustic guitar gets things started, warmly finger-plucked to perfection as it sets a hopeful vibe for the tune. Cavazos shortly arrives with her vocal performance, immediately hitting our Phoebe Bridgers niche with her soft and chill delivery, effortless feeding thoughtful lyrics into the sonic dreamscape.

Other than a distant ambient pad, the first half of “Can’t Get Worse” maintains a barebones arrangement, allowing listeners to fully take in the delicate and, oftentimes, personal subject matter. But midpoint brings an expansion in the sound, as the track is joined by some deep bass and prolific strings, providing just enough dynamic variation to keep listeners fully engaged.

At this point, layers of supporting vocals emerge, weaving their wide and glorious presence into the far-reaches of the track. And aside from the most subtle of kick drums, the song is void of percussive elements, allowing each and every instrument to flow freely throughout the sonic space, which ultimately culminates in a magnificently natural crescendo.

Can’t Get Worse” is the first that we’re hearing from Christina Cavazos, but if she keeps making music like this, we can assure you that it will not be the last time she’s featured on the blog.
