Christian Alexander – “the ones we love”
Preston-raised, London-based singer-songwriter Christian Alexander has just released “the ones we love,” a tender, hypnotic, and existential meditation on the strange mystery of love itself.
“the ones we love” is bedroom/lo-fi pop at its very finest. The song is so raw and intimate that it’s easy to imagine walking past a piano shop and hearing the notes pour out through the doorway. It feels as though we’ve accidentally stumbled upon Alexander’s private voice recordings, the track entering our ears as though he trusts us with his innermost thoughts.
For as sparse as it is, the song leaves a profound impact on the listener. Much of this comes from the vulnerable nature of the production, which, for the most part, feels like a solo performance. However, during the chorus, Alexander introduces a vocal harmony that allows the refrain to burrow deep within your chest: “Why do we love the ones we love?”
“the ones we love” feels less like a song and more like a fleeting moment of human connection captured on tape. There’s something beautifully unguarded about this one… it drifts into the room softly, settles somewhere deep inside of you, and refuses to leave.
