CHAFT - “Secrets” and “Sun”

CHAFT marks the beginning of the solo venture of Derek Miller, a multi-instrumentalist from Boston, Massachusetts. He has just released his debut indie pop-rock EP, Now That’s What I Call CHAFT Volume 1, and to celebrate the occasion, I shall delve into the tracks, “Secrets” and “Sun.”

Secrets” feels like a vintage musical journey right from the get go. Opening to a relaxed drum groove that has a satisfying sense of swagger, you cannot help but embrace the upbeat energy of this track. A rich bass pulses underneath, while mellow layers of electric piano and warbling guitar add a lush sense of warmth.

The song has a pleasing sense of ebb and flow, thanks to the playful use of textures. Splashes of distorted, fuzzy lead guitar or more driving rhythm guitar liven up key areas. The addition in the musical break of a choir-like harmony is simply inspired.

The vocal performance has the vibes of Paul McCartney or even ELO, heightening the nostalgic vibes. This is accentuated by the harmonising backing layers that support throughout. “Secrets” is simply a delight to listen to.

The next song, “Sun,” has the vibes of The Beta Band or maybe even Beck. It is traditional indie pop/ rock, full of spirit and vibrant tones. Opening to acoustic rhythm guitar, the track has a satisfying, slightly unpolished feel. Weaving piano lines sustain into the composition, while a drum groove propels the composition forward with a determined beat. The use of tom grooves and changes in the acoustic rhythm give a lush sense of contrast and ebb and flow.

As we hit the chorus sections, the track really opens up thanks to the rich use of harmonizing vocals. These sections feel wide and expansive. “Sun” is a captivating listen.

CHAFT has delivered some really high-quality songs to the table here. They bask in upbeat energy and are playfully confident and experimental. Both will leave a lasting impression on the listener as the musicianship is topnotch– CHAFT is not messing around. The new EP, Now That’s What I Call CHAFT Volume 1, is definitely worth checking out.
