Brother Bird - “something better”

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Caroline Glaser, aka Brother Bird, has just released the deeply dreamy single, “something better,” along with the promise of an upcoming LP, another year.

The song opens with the chords of a piano, carefully punctuating the accompanying lo-fi beat. Glaser does not waste anyone’s time here, immediately beginning her charmingly soothing and slightly whimsical vocal delivery. The sound is instantly refreshing and, although its derivation might have you believe otherwise, it is impossible not to feel good as it enters your ears.

The arrangement builds, with some softly strummed guitar joining the mix, providing momentum and a slight sense of urgency as it rounds out the sonic space. The refrain brings the addition of some bass and a more fleshed-out beat from the drum kit. And with each passing line of lyrics, “something better” moves closer and closer to becoming our new favorite tune.

By the end of the chorus, the track has gone from a gentle pop song to a slightly more aggressive production that subtly flirts with the sounds of indie rock. The guitar receives some distortion, the drums are hit a bit harder, and a warm overdrive washes across the vocals. All of these sounds will likely have you cranking up the volume, allowing you to fully appreciate the soft layers of vocal harmonies.

Listening to “something better” will leave you longing for more tunes from Brother Bird. And though her album, another year, will not be available until March 8th, we give you our word that we will feature any additional singles she sends our way. Until then, bask in the indie glory of this righteous little ditty.
