Brent de la Cruz - “Smithereens”

Brent de la Cruz, from San Diego, California, has just released majestic downtempo indie rock song, “Smithereens.”

Smithereens” is an incredibly rousing track that explores the mythology surrounding figures we either admire or fear, as well as the chaos and destruction that can sometimes be left in their wake. Confident and beautifully unhurried, “Smithereens” is a slow burning earworm that gives the familiar impression that it has always existed as part of the universe.

Founded on a downtempo groove, graceful lead guitar lines that melodically tumble and roll with ease, caramel toned rhythm guitar and a healthy splash of exultant trumpets, the song is not just cinematic, it is a reflective, velvety anthem. What is especially pleasing is the care and attention that has been paid to the slick mix of the song. Texturally shifting it oozes grandeur.

Brent de la Cruz delivers a distinctive yet understated vocal to accompany the production. Evocative, meditative, intimate, the performance magnificently heightens the immersiveness whilst adding a soulful melodic quality. Mellow and glossy in all the right ways, “Smithereens” is the second single to be taken from Brent de la Cruz’s forthcoming EP, BLANC, slated for release this summer.
