Bleary - “sugar splint”
From Nashville, TN, Bleary hits us with a catchy spoonful of pop-imbued shoegaze: “sugar splint.”
It’s extremely rare that an artist will win us over with this genre, as most tend to delve a bit too close to sythny slices of dream pop. And while there is definitely a time and place for that, we simply prefer arrangements that have been saturated with layers upon layers of guitars, which is exactly what you’ll get with “sugar splint.”
With a rhythm that is dominated by the tom toms during the verses, a wonderfully multitracked vocal performance pulls you right into the reverberating world of Bleary. And once you’ve allowed “sugar splint” to fill your earholes, you will find that each verse is punctuated by one hell of an ear-worm– these hooky melodies are then echoed at the ends of the powerful refrains, leaving us with a track that is genuinely unforgettable.
The dense wall of guitars on the choruses and an abrupt transition to more of a straight forward beat brings a world of juxtaposition between the sections. Combined with the soaring vocal textures, this makes for a truly dynamic listening experience, and a splendid hint of the influence of artists such as Swervedriver, Lush, and Ozean. While not our usual wheelhouse, the talent and attention to detain here is undeniable and we haven’t been able to get “sugar splint” out of our heads since Bleary first sent it over to us.
“sugar splint” is now available everywhere you get your music, via yk records. We are confident that this is the first of many features for the band, but until we hear from them again, you can connect with Bleary here: Spotify | Bandcamp | Instagram | Website
