Emma Bieniewicz - “Space”

We last heard from Emma Bieniewicz back in February, but she’s returned to the blog today with “Space,” a song about “putting yourself first and finding the joys in being alone.” Quite honestly, we knew that we would love the track based solely upon this description.

If you’ve never heard any of Emma’s music, imagine an ethereal soundscape with hints of Tomberlin and Julien Baker permeating the atmosphere. There’s enough raw, acoustic guitar within “Space” for us to feel comfortable classifying it under indie folk, but there is such a tranquil and ruminative vibe occurring here that it nestles itself quite nicely within the genre of dream pop.

Emma’s vocal is, of course, one of the reasons that everyone should hear her music. She delivers the lyrics in a very soft and soothing fashion, as though she’s revealing a secret to each listener. Her voice is supported by airy backing vocals delivered so softly that they are, at times, nothing more than a whisper. It all makes for quite the intimate performance.

Instead of letting “Space” completely reside within its cinematic niche, Emma utilizes a driving beat that grants the song access to the emotions of the listener while also giving them a reason to tap their feet. This is most obvious in the final third of the song, which is a culmination of all the energy collected along the track’s journey.

The lyrics are perfectly introspective and the song’s overall vibe will surely help you mentally escape, so we recommend playing it all weekend.
