Benjamin Spike Saunders - “About Here”

Bristol-based multi-instrumentalist Benjamin Spike Saunders has just released the deftly dreamy sounds of “About Here,” a tune from his new, self-titled EP.

This song flows into the listener like liquid love, a caress of sonic waves that gently make room for a bout of deep introspection. After a brief, distant and lo-fi beat, the sound swiftly evolves into a full production, complete with a wonderfully churning acoustic guitar that sounds as though it has been down-tuned, allowing it to softly wash away the deepest perils of one’s emotional turmoil.

A steady beat pushes the arrangement forward, while both analogue and digital artifacts pad the production. “About Here” provides the soundtrack to a sort of daydream, and conjures images of both the past and future– it could be used to reflect back on one’s life, but could also fit comfortably atop a post-apocalyptic landscape. The vocals are emotional and breathy, slightly reminiscent of the more serene offerings from Chino Moreno.

The highlights here are all of the wonderful, ethereal layers woven into the track. From the subdued vocal harmonies to the quiet, melodious piano keys, you are bound to find a new treasure every time you press play.

If you like what you hear, we encourage you to further explore Saunders’ new EP. The opening track, “Dressing Gown,” boasts some significant ear candy for those of you who are more guitar-inclined. It is slightly more upbeat than “About Here” and gives off a sort of psychedelic energy, musically, which hooked us immediately. Give it a spin:
