Jamie McDell - “Beach House”

Beach House” is the latest release by New Zealand-based artist Jamie McDell. The song has loads of great sounds and I can only compare it to the work of artists like Stevie Nicks and Jade Bird.

The song starts with a weighty and slow drum groove. There is a nice, reflective atmosphere that is created as instruments are introduced. Arpeggiated banjo plucks form the rhythm for the song, giving the track a warm and inviting texture. Lead guitar weaves brilliantly over the groove, providing some nice, gritty tones and licks. The sound shimmers brightly over the track. A second electric guitar plays muted notes that melds perfectly with the banjo. The bass is warm and adds a nice thickness to the arrangement.

I really like how McDell subtly plays with contrast within this track. The bass or drums are occasionally removed, allowing certain sections to gain a sense of fluctuating dynamics. The muted guitar progressively becomes less muted as well, adding a gritty pad-like feel to the song. The vocal delivery of McDell perfectly captures the feeling behind the song’s lyrics. Her voice is authentic, but there is also a nice hint of tenderness as she laments unfulfilled goals and battles self-doubt. The backing vocals add nicely to the song’s emotional feel and the whole performance gives you the feeling of being liberated.

Jamie McDell has written a great indie pop rock / Americana song here with “Beach House.” The song is soulful and warm, but there is also a fair amount of grit in the textures. This song will get you in the mood for leaving troubles behind and heading to the beach.
