The Aquadolls - “Beachy”

The Aquadolls dive right in, opening with the verse as if waiting for vocals is so 2021. Like a dip into the Pacific Ocean, “Beachy” is a refreshingly cool and pleasant sound that washes over you, a welcoming blend of friendly, dream-pop vocals and shimmery guitar, paired with a robust rhythm section. These drums have definitely been shellacked in saturation, giving them an extra grittiness that satisfies like sand between your toes. In context, it is a nice contrast to the sweet vocal stylings of singer Melissa Brooks. Sonically, the song seems to say, “We are here to rock nicely,” as the feel-good vibes warm you up like their hometown So-Cal sun.

At 0:45, the chorus makes a splash, picking up the pace like a break in LA traffic. That’s when an irresistible “ooh uh ooh ooh” melodic hook takes over, and its mood—like cruising down PCH with the top down. It’s the earworm that’s been genetically engineered to feed my bird brain. Lightheartedly blending themes of pandemic fatigue and relationship tension, it’s a relatable tune with enough whimsy to keep you smiling as the chorus repeats: “My butt looks good in the mirror. I bet you wanna be holding me. When I kiss your lips you quiver. A little heaven and ecstasy.”

Produced by Chris Szcezech (of Goo Goo Dolls fame), the upcoming album, Charmed, will feature this single and, by the sounds of it, is sure to please. Having just gotten off a tour supporting Incubus and Sublime with Rome, these dolls of the aqua variety are surely headed in the right direction!
