Anna Grace Odom - “Take”

Nashville-based Anna Grace Odom arrives on the blog with her heartfelt debut single, “Take,” a fantastic, cinematic tune filled with dynamic twists and turns.

As you press play, you will notice a synth swelling in the distance before your ears are filled with the delightful finger-plucks of a raw, acoustic guitar. The initial mood is pleasantly stripped-back with a sparse arrangement– completely on par for the folk genre. Odom’s vocal enters, glorious and soothing, and it sounds as though her performance has been doubled, which is exactly the way we like it. We are quite confident that fans of Adrianne Lenker and Phoebe Bridgers will immediately feel right at home.

One of this tune’s highlights occurs around the one-minute mark, when the previously folksy and streamlined arrangement completely doubles in size, with the addition of an upbeat rhythm and the dreamy notes from an electric guitar, generously covered in a thick coat of reverb. This is one of those dynamic shifts that we mentioned earlier, bringing a level of cinematic sophistication to Odom’s craft, the tail of which dramatically slows down in order to draw the listener into the track’s conclusion.

It is during the final third of “Take” where we are met with a softly strummed version of the song’s inception, complete with the raw and honest delivery of Odom’s emotive vocal. And although this is only her first musical offering to the world, we can only hope that it means that there’s much more on the way because, ladies and gentlemen, this is how you write a song.

Take” was made with producer Jacob James and collaborator Billy!, and mastered by Joe Hutchinson.
