Andie Mechanic - “Lucy”

We last heard from singer-songwriter Andie Mechanic back in March, upon the release of her track, “Clinton,” but she returns to us today with the second single from her upcoming EP, “Lucy.”

Mechanic utilizes a melancholic vibe here, brought to the surface with an expertly plucked acoustic guitar. Ethereal artifacts are strewn about the arrangement, ensuring that she holds the interest of all who hear. These additional sounds are quite ghostly and ominous; however, they lean toward the dreamy end of the genre, without distracting the listener from the heart of the song.

Mechanic’s vocal arrives, just as raw and heartfelt as we remember it to be, with nary a hint of any digital manipulation– exactly the way we prefer. Her lyrics delve into the idea of abandoning “someone that you once promised to love forever.” She goes on to explain how this is her interpretation of horror, “hoping this song allows you to accept the worst parts of yourself like I have mine.”

The ear candy within “Lucy” seems to know no bounds, as our ears are filled with fantastic swells of backing vocals and the random pulses of synths. All of these details end up providing a vast listening space, with an ambience that seems to go on forever. And as the track reaches its crescendo, there is a sense of urgency brought about through the layers of vocal effects and the climax of digital enhancements.

To finish it off, Mechanic retreats to the tenderness that we first heard at the song’s inception. “Lucy” is quite a moving piece of music and causes us to look forward to Mechanic’s forthcoming EP, In This State.
