Angel Abaya - “Better”

Though she is based in Los Angeles, singer-songwriter Angel Abaya has been very active in Boise, Idaho, supporting their culture and arts community through organizations such as Treefort Music Fest, LED, and Boise Rock School. In the midst of all of her work in the Boise music scene, she has also found the time to deliver the soothing sounds found inside of her new single, “Better.”

Better” is quite simple in structure, built upon a reoccurring bass line and a soft, jazzy layer of percussion. As you begin to listen, you will notice new sounds coming through in waves, such as some keys and the chords of a superbly strummed, vibey guitar. Although the initial low-end groove is quite melodic and catchy as it weaves itself around your brain, the star of “Better” is Abaya’s vocal work.

At first, the vocals are quite shy and relaxed, somewhat reminiscent of Mazzy Star– one of our favorites, if you’ve been paying attention. But the soft vibrato here is likely what will bring you back for multiple listens. Abaya’s voice simply glides across the top of the constant, reliable groove and before long, you’ll find yourself involuntarily bobbing your head as the song carries you away to a ‘better’ place.

The last third of the track is what ultimately sold us on this one, when the vocal harmonies swoop in and bring you to the realization that some songs require little else that an unembellished groove– if the mood is right and the vocals are on point, the music can carry you away just the same.

Better” comes from Abaya’s upcoming album, Bubble, due for release May 5th via Earth Libraries.
