Creature Canyon - “Who?”

San Diego-based indie rock outfit Creature Canyon have just released the psychedelically-tinged sounds of “Who?”

The track opens with an acoustic guitar belting out some wide and reverberating chords beneath some ethereally-charged and near-ominous vocals. Let this be a lesson that you should never underestimate the power of some well-placed “oooohs.” The vibe is warmly reminiscent of Cage the Elephant, which is something that we wish we could say more often.

It is not long before the rest of the band arrives, boasting a rather upbeat rhythm, and while “Who” is slightly outside of our blog’s usual flavor of indie, one truly cannot deny its craft. Additionally, Creature Canyon obviously know their way around a recording studio, and the result is an infectiously energetic tune that we have not been able to stop spinning.

Of course, the vocal performance is a major highlight here, setting the track alight with a sheen of tube saturation, gifting the song its psychedelic character. Additional layers have been masterfully utilized, including a rather menacing harmony that adds a great deal of width and excitement to the overall performance.

Ear candy has been provided via some well placed notes from the lead guitar, but the grand prize is the ear-worm of a chorus, which makes you want to sing along before you’ve even had a chance to learn the lyrics. And although “Who” is an exemplar of modern rock, there is absolutely no denying its late 1960s inspiration, ultimately culminating in a tune that we plan to enjoy all summer.
